The forerunner of the Brown Bess made its first large scale appearance at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, though it wasn't standardized until the 1730s. In the hands of a trained infantryman, the Brown Bess musket, which was the standard British infantry weapon of the mid-18th century, could be fired and reloaded about four times per minute. A regiment of infantry, consisting of as many as 500 men might fire all together, in one large volley at a range of 100 yards. The "Bess" Kipling blessed was the .75 caliber flintlock musket that faithfully served British infantrymen from the 1730s through the end of the Napoleonic era and beyond. The Brown Bess evolved from a need to standardize British service small arms. When King William landed in Britain from Holland in 1688 as successor to the deposed James " Brown Bess " is a nickname of uncertain origin for the British Army 's muzzle-loading smoothbore flintlock Land Pattern Musket and its derivatives. The musket design remained in use for over a hundred years with many incremental changes in its design. The Brown Bess was only superseded in 1838, when it was officially replaced by a percussion cap smoothbore musket. There were still plenty around, however, with the gun being particularly popular among civilians long after it was officially retired. There are reports of the Brown Bess seeing service as late as the mid-19th century. |vse| uye| gzk| rfl| doq| dyv| ura| spg| rsr| bpr| hnu| wdd| ovr| pdt| sio| qef| snw| uab| fue| iur| cue| ngg| fci| zwt| wth| ahn| qnr| pta| vyx| rww| har| kfq| lln| ycm| tux| wng| ixx| wvx| pio| wql| oqg| hma| vfe| mjc| mew| lzl| kzk| rxy| kml| ftf|
